The NSF 2026 Idea Machine is an initiative of the National Science Foundation to uncover “grand challenges” in research with the potential for transformative impact, in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the Nation in 2026.
This program is made possible by National Science Foundation grant No. 2027097. The goal of the workshops is to identify research priorities at the intersection of energy technology and social justice. Workshop participants will integrate diverse perspectives, across disciplines and across sectors, on how the US energy system can rapidly and equitably transition away from fossil fuels. The workshops are hosted by the Energy Transition Institute at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
